Exploring How the Millennial Generation is Changing the Workforce.
For many years, I have been fascinated by demographic studies and their implications for the workplace. Working in corporate environments for the past 30 years, I’ve watched firsthand as the generations of employees around me have changed and evolved. As Baby Boomers and even my own Generation X peers began to leave the workforce and Millennials began to take their place, I noticed a drastic shift in the dynamics of the work environment. This piqued my interest in demographic studies, and I became fascinated by the Millennial Generation in particular—how they were different from previous generations, how they were approaching life differently than those who came before them, and how they were bringing fresh perspectives to the workplace.
My interests took me on a journey of research and learning.
Learnings that I’ve shared in my popular Pluralsight Leadership course, “Generational Leadership: Adapting to the Changing Workplace.” In this course, I explore the defining attributes of each generation and share in-depth studies that explore each generation’s workplace personalities. Learnings are designed to educate leaders on each generation’s common workplace communication, their most desired training methods, and how to best motivate and inspire each generation.
The more I studied the Millennial generation, the more I gravitated to their way of thinking and appreciated all the changes they were bringing to the workplace. For example, millennials are often marked by an appreciation for opportunities and experiences over material items. As such, they have been pushing employers to rethink work policies in order to provide more flexible hours and greater autonomy while still maintaining productivity levels. This approach has helped organizations increase employee engagement and satisfaction while encouraging creativity and innovation in the workplace.

The Birth and Identity of the Millennial Generation
The Millennial Generation, also known as Gen Y or the Net Generation, refers to the group of individuals born between 1980 and 2000. This generation has been marked by a cultural shift towards a renewed focus on children and family, with declining rates of divorce and abortion and an increased emphasis on child safety and welfare. Millennials were raised by optimistic and nurturing parents, often leading to a sense of specialness and appreciation that sets them apart from their Gen X predecessors.
The Defining Characteristics of Millennials
One of the defining features of the Millennial Generation is its racial and ethnic diversity. In the United States, they make up a third of the population and are more diverse than any other generation. However, they also face economic diversity, with a significant portion living in the extremes of wealth and poverty as the middle-class shrinks.
Despite common stereotypes, research has shown that millennials are actually highly involved in volunteerism and civic engagement. As high school students, over 75% were involved in some form of volunteer work, and this trend has continued into their college years and beyond.
The Major Events That Shaped the Millennial Experience
In terms of major events, the Millennial Generation has experienced a number of significant and often traumatic occurrences. The Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 and the Atlanta Olympics bombing in the same year were two such events that caused widespread fear and anxiety. The potential Y2K bug, which threatened to disrupt computer systems at the turn of the millennium, also caused concern. More recently, the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the Great Recession have had a profound impact on the lives of Millennials.

The Millennials’ unique perspectives have encouraged companies across industries to think outside-the-box while creating innovative products and services that meet our ever-changing consumer demands.
Furthermore, their willingness to challenge established methods is often useful for streamlining processes or coming up with innovative ideas that have never been considered before. These qualities combined have made this generation invaluable for many organizations, both large and small.
Despite facing challenges and criticism, the Millennial Generation represents a powerful force in society. With their diverse backgrounds, talents, and perspectives, they have the potential to drive change in various sectors, including the workplace, education system, government, and communities. It is important to recognize and understand the unique experiences and contributions of this generation as they continue to shape the future.
